Unveiling BA.2.86: A New Variant Emerges Amidst COVID Landscape

Recent reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have unveiled the emergence of a novel and highly mutated lineage of the COVID-19 virus.

Named as BA.2.86, this lineage has been identified in various countries, including the United States, Denmark, and Israel. Our sources from the CDC have shared this information through messaging platform X, underlining the significance of staying informed.

“While delving deeper into BA.2.86, the CDC reinforces the importance of adhering to their recommended measures against COVID-19,” the agency conveyed.

Earlier on the same day, the World Health Organization (WHO) echoed this development on X, designating BA.2.86 as a “variant under monitoring.” This classification is due to the multitude of mutations present in this lineage.

To date, only a limited number of sequences of this variant have been reported across select nations, according to WHO.

Dr. S. Wesley Long, Medical Director of Diagnostic Microbiology at Houston Methodist, highlighted that this new lineage, with its 36 mutations compared to the prevailing XBB.1.5 COVID variant, reflects an earlier branch of the virus’s evolution.

Crucially, it’s yet uncertain whether BA.2.86 can outpace other viral strains or gain an advantage in evading immunity responses from previous infections or vaccinations.

A preliminary evaluation indicates that this new variant might demonstrate “equal or greater escape than XBB.1.5 from antibodies generated by pre-Omicron and initial Omicron variants,” as emphasized by Jesse Bloom, a virologist associated with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, in a presentation published on Thursday.

The upcoming COVID booster shots are designed to target the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5.

Bloom’s insights underscore that BA.2.86 is likely to exhibit lower transmissibility than current dominant variants, possibly leading to less extensive spread. However, a more comprehensive dataset from sequencing is crucial to confirm this trend.

Dr. Long shared his apprehensions, stating, “My primary concern would be the potential for a larger spike in cases than what we’ve observed in recent surges. Nonetheless, the booster shots will continue to bolster your defenses against COVID as a whole.”
